I am Principal Research Officer in the Department of Oceanography at University center with the title of Associate Professor and I am research director of the Nansen Tutu Center for Marine Environmental

I am theme  leader of ACCESS Climate Theme1 and UCT coordinator of ACCESS Marine Theme 6

I am President elected of South African Society for Atmospheric Science, chairman of the committee for the extension of the  international Pilot Array Telemetered Mooring in the Tropical South East Atlantic (PIRATA SEE), Member of the CLIVAR Atlantic panel and the Clivar Africa panel of the World Climate Research Program.

My research has led me to all aspects of ocean atmosphere interaction, from creating numerical models to experimental work at sea, from turbulent to global scale, from meteorology and physical oceanography to climatology and more recently to the impact of climate change and variability on regional climate and marine ecosystem.  More recently, I was instrumental in finding the finance, scientific motivation and partners to deploy the PIRATA South East Extension Atlas mooring Kizomba in the tropical Atlantic. This marks the return of Southern Africa in the international arena of global climate observation and together with my work on Benguela Niños it is a contribution to the programme Preface. I have worked extensively on natural climate variability, droughts, and floods with a focus on the impact of the ocean on weather and climate. Recent achievements include the discovery of a current in the Indian Ocean and documentation of the reason and causes of the recent Agulhas Current warming as well as the discovery of Benguela Niños mechanisms. Together with my partners we put forward a new theory for the relation between Agulhas Current transport Intensity and Agulhas leakage and we documented impact of El Nino Sothern Oscillation on South African climate.
